Building a Dog House

Dogs are man's best friend, right? As much as possible, we'd want to keep them happy by showing how we care for them. One good way of doing that is to build dog houses that reflect our affection to them. Building dog houses is quite basic, however, there are aspects that we need to consider to make its occupant feel good and healthy. Also, it makes dog houses a happy place to be in.

How To / Instruction

Difficulty: Normal
  • Step

    1

Consider carefully the climate that you are in coupled with the size of the animal the dog house is meant for. If it is typically a warmer climate, a larger house might be desired as opposed to a smaller, better insulated dog house in colder climates.

  • Step

    2

Having considered the temperature of the climate vs. the animal's size, consider where the house is to be placed. Within a fenced yard, atop concrete, facing the wind and so forth.

  • Step

    3

If the house is to be set over concrete, the floor should be constructed of a framework of wooden boards with a single sheet over top so as to make the floor of the house softer to lay on as opposed to hard concrete. The base of the floor should be on concrete or stone stilts to not allow moisture to build up and rot the floor which applies to any ground conditions.

  • Step

    4

With the necessary size considered, insulation, the walls should be constructed of a framework surrounded by a series of paneling. Probably a plywood wall would be enough for most conditions, though a metal panel over a layer of tar paper over wood would be best. Insulation in the center of which with another wooden paneling on the inside of the house in the proper climates.

  • Step

    5

A tented roof would be the most sensible design, allowing snow and rain to run off. Wood would be find in most cases, but again, aluminum paneling over a layer of tar paper over wood sheets would be best, more costly, but much more structurally sound and longer lasting.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use natural materials, such as wood.

  • Make the roof waterproof.

  • Add a floor or mat to the ground.
