How to become a model

Becoming a supermodel is an ambition of many but few can reach this goal. If you have the guts, the wits, the style and the right attitude it can still be a tough climb to the top. Read the following and if you still think you've got the determination then get ready to take the center stage and get started to achieve your life in the limelight.

How To / Instruction

Difficulty: Normal
  • Step

    1

Physical Standards: This is a harsh industry focused on standards. Those who do not fit the standards have little if no chance of entering this field. To be a standard female model, the minimum height requirement is 5'8" and the weight expectation at this height is about 115 lbs. If you do not fit these qualifications, you will have a very hard time entering the industry. The weight and height requirements for plus models are a bit different. The height requirement is the same and the model should wear a size 10 or larger. If you do not fit either of these, then maybe catalog work could be for you, the requirements for a female catalog model are 5'7" or taller, dress size between a 4 and a 6. It's a rough industry and if you do not fit these standards you will find the climb to the top even harder.

  • Step

    2

Start early in life, the ideal age for supermodels is from 15 to 22 years old. Starting after 22 is pretty hard.

  • Step

    3

Train your body to the responsibilities of this career. This is an image driven industry that will require stringent dietary plans and lots of exercise. Many models do not keep a healthy life style. Consult your doctor on the best way to maintain the required weight requirements to optimize your health. A personal trainer and nutritionist can help you reach your weight requirements.

  • Step

    4

Portfolio and photographs. You will need to have photographs taken to show your range. It helps if these are done by a professional (a worth wile investment). If you cannot afford a professional, then have some head shots and body shots taken. These should be of you alone and not of you and friends. Pick your best shots and have them printed into 8x10 sizing. Always have these on you when meeting agents or clients.

  • Step

    5

Find yourself an agent. Sure we all hear the stories of supermodels that were "discovered" while playing jumprope on a sidewalk in Brazil, but these are few and far between. Get yourself a reputable agent to help you get your portfolio started, gigs booked and who will advice you on what you need to do to succeed in the business. You should aspire to work for Wilhemina, Ford or Elite but unless you are absolutely stunning, you will probably have to start at a smaller, lesser known agency. None the less, it can't hurt to try the big guys as well.

  • Step

    6

Need the numbers for those big guys...here goes: Elite 111 East 22nd Street New York, NY Phone: 212-529-9700 Ford 142 Greene St, 4th Floor New York, NY Phone: 212-219-6500 IMG Models 22 East 71st Street New York, NY Phone: 212-529-9700 Metropolitan 220 5th Avenue, Suite 800 New York, NY Phone: 212-989-0100 Next 23 Watts Street New York, NY Phone: 212-925-5100

  • Step

    7

Be prompt. Being late can kill your career in its infancy. Be it agents or clients, make sure that they see you as a professional.

  • Step

    8

Practice: Have a friend take photographs of you. Copy poses and looks you see in magazines. Try to convey different emotions. This will help you when you are interviewing with potential clients.

  • Step

    9

When you are at interviews you will most likely be asked to take measurements, take a few pictures and will hear criticism. Be ready for it and do not take criticism badly.

  • Step

    10

Get a lawyer. Before signing any agreements or contracts, make sure to hire an independent lawyer to protect your interests.
