How To / Instruction

Difficulty: Normal
  • Step

    1

Purchase or construct a compost bin. You could recycle or just simply buy a pail or a bin that has a tight fitting lid. It should be tall enough to contain all the compost. The lid is needed to keep small insects and critters out and to keep soil moist.

  • Step

    2

Place the bin conveniently, preferably outside due to smell. You might want to keep the odor away from indoors. You can drill holes in the bottom of the container maybe around 8 to 10 small holes for exposure to air. You can also put holes on the side or the walls of the bin.

  • Step

    3

Place some shredded newspaper or dry leaves on the bottom of your compost bin, fill about 1/8 - 1/4 full. You can place dirt on top of that and start filling it with kitchen wastes, food scraps and paper products.

  • Step

    4

Stir your compost from time to time to make sure that soil covers the composts. Mixing the compost will break the food scraps faster. Also make sure that it is always moist. You can sprinkle lukewarm water to keep it wet.

  • Step

    5

After 2-3 months, your compost is ready. Sift your compost items and use them to help your garden grow ! Gardeners call compost , Black gold! Do not use everything, save some 1/3 of your compost to start over again.

Tips and Warnings

  • Turn over compost pile regularly.

  • Add worms to compost pile if possible as they can help in the breaking down of scraps.
