When giving gifts we always think if the person to whom we're giving the gift to would like it.  But for babies it doesn't really matter.  The usual gifts we give are cute things like stuffed toys and baby clothes.  How about we break free of these usual gifts and create one that is perfect as a centerpiece idea and a cute useful gift for baby showers?  Diaper cake is such a practical and personalized gift you could give.  Follow these steps to create a cake that is easier than baking.

  • Step

    1

    Buy diapers, small rubber bands or thin ribbon, one inch ribbon, small decorations like toys, figurines or cake toppers used for birthday cakes and transparent wrap that is used for flower arrangements.

    Roll each diaper and secure with either a rubber band or a thin piece of ribbon.

    Get 3 round household containers in appropriate sizes for your cake tiers. I like to use cake rounds because they're very easy to work with, but you could use bowls, empty butter cookie containers, or anything else that provides the right sizing.

    Put the diapers in the containers, packing them fairly tight.

    If your containers are short, simply tie the thicker ribbon around the diapers, then remove from container. If not, carefully turn out the diapers from the container and then tie the wider ribbon.

    Cut two long pieces of the thicker ribbon and place them perpendicular to each other so that they cross in the center of the ribbons.

    Put your largest tier on the ribbon cross, then stack the higher tiers.

    Tie the ribbons that are underneath the cake into a bow on the top tier.

    Add decorations. If necessary, they can be secured with double-sided tape; however, I most often use these as center pieces, so they can be placed on the table and then decorated, rather than having to move them again.

    If the diaper cake is not to be used as a centerpiece, wrap the diaper cake with the florist wrap.

Tips and Warnings

  • It's best to know what size of diapers to buy and use for your diaper cake.

  • It is also good to use different diaper sizes if you're not certain which size would fit the baby.
