A loom is made up of wood that holds the wrap thread under tension and inter weave the yarn. Handloom is a manual way of using the loom to weave or create a fabric. Weaving, or hand loom is being done about 2,000 years ago and was brought to England by the Romans.
Hand looming started as basic until John Kay patented the flying shuttle in 1733. By means of cords attached to a picking peg, a single weaver could cause the shuttle to be knocked back and forth across the loom from one shuttle box to the other, just by using one hand. The speed of weaving was doubled; and a single weaver could make cloths of any width, whereas previously two men had sat together at a loom to make broad cloth. By 1800 it was estimated that there were 250,000 handlooms in Britain.
The major components of the loom are the warp beam, heddles, harnesses, shuttle, reed and take-up roll. Shedding, picking, battening and taking-up operations all includes in the yarn-making process of using a hand loom.
There are also different types of loom: one is back strap loom where one bar is attached to a fixed object and the other to the weaver usually by means of a strap around the back. Second is warp-weighted loom is keeping bundles of the warp threads taut. Third is draw loom that requires two operators, the weaver and an assistant called a "drawboy" to manage the figure harness.
