What is an Arborvitae?


The Arborvitae is tree or shrub from the cypress family. Some may refer to it as a small shrub but most may address it as a tree. This type of shrub or tree is commonly found in Eastern Canada and the North-eastern part of the United States. It prefers colder climates. This plant cannot survive in Southern regions. This type of evergreen is not drought-tolerant so enough water in a well-drained soil is important to grow Arborvitae. It grows best in moist soils. It can also adapt in poor, rocky, sterile, dry or wet soils. Though it can grow in neutral or acidic soils, it won’t grow as well as when planted in soils with alkaline pH.

There are many types of Arborvitae. It comes in different shapes and sizes. The Emerald Green Arborvitae trees grow for about twelve to fourteen feet. Let alone, this tree may reach as much as thirty feet tall and ten feet wide. It has soft to touch leaves and looking it at close, leaves may appear as if covered with scales. The leaves may spread three to four feet. The American Arborvitae is wide and cone-shaped. Others may shape like pyramids while some are rounded.

Arborvitae has an important role in the ecosystem. Its leaves are one of the most cherished foods eaten by deers and mammals during winter. Its thick canopy also serves as a home for birds and shade for mammals all year round.

Arborvitaes are also used for landscaping. The emerald green arborvitae can be planted in a row and can be use as plant borders. It can also be use as somewhat like a fence or a wide screen. Though dimensions of the arborvitae may exceed on what you need, you may prune them to fit in the purpose. They make wonderful privacy screens or living walls. It is excellent in blocking neighbours without giving up much of your front yard. Plus, Arborvitae has its aesthetic purpose in beautifying your surroundings.
