What Is Optical Recording?

Readout of an optical medium.

Optical recording is the method of recording signals on a medium through the use of light. One medium is called the photographic film and has been commonly used in 1950s. The previous storage mediums for optical recording were reflective discs, transparent discs, and floppy discs. Later, the so-called optical disc was developed to be used as another means. Optical disc is a flat rounded disc which encodes binary data in a special material on one of its flat surface. Improvements have been made years after that result to a good quality reproduced signals. The use of laser as a light source and pulse-code modulation (PCM) techniques, for example, make it possible to acquire high-class reproduction of sound signals in optical disc recording systems.
